DuraFlex makes a solid liner, but the cap and crown above it take the weather in ways the liner never does. Here’s what we see on Stamford rooftops, season after season.

- Animal entry past a missing DuraFlex rain cap. Raccoons don’t care what brand your liner is. When a cap is gone or bent, they treat the flue like a studio apartment. We install stainless caps sized to the exact liner OD, with a screen mesh fine enough to keep out what needs keeping out without choking draft.
- Multi-flue cap failure on DuraFlex multi-liner installs. Some Stamford homes run two DuraFlex liners side by side, one for a furnace and one for a fireplace. A single multi-flue cap covers both, but if the cap wasn’t sealed properly along its full perimeter, rain runs between the flue tiles and straight into the chase. Not always. A liner replacement often disturbs the crown, and if the crown is old or thin, it’s the right time to address it. But we’ve also seen crowns that held up fine through a liner drop and needed nothing. We assess the crown independently of the liner. If it doesn’t need doing, Wendell will be the first one to tell you, and the invoice will show it.
Water gets between the liner and the chimney structure. Freeze-thaw then breaks down the masonry from the inside, which is how a small cap problem becomes a several-thousand-dollar repair. A missing rain cap also lets animals and debris enter. Fixing a cap or crown early is far cheaper than rebuilding the smoke chamber or replacing the flue tile later.
