Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed
Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Flue Liner Replacement: The Stamford Owner’s Guide
If you have a Gelco flue liner that’s cracked, rusted through, or pulling away at the seams, we can replace it. A typical Gelco flue liner replacement in Stamford runs $1,400 to $3,200 installed depending on your chimney’s height and how much teardown the old liner requires. We stock Gelco-compatible stainless liner sections on the truck, so most jobs are done in a single visit, not spread across three weeks of waiting on parts. Most Stamford homeowners find out their Gelco liner has failed the hard way: water stains on the ceiling near the chimney, a flaky rust residue in the firebox, or the smell of exhaust backing into the living room on a windy day.
Which Gelco Models This Applies To
Gelco made liner kits in two main series that show up constantly in Stamford homes built from the late 1970s through the early 2000s: the 6-inch and 8-inch round stainless flex liners sold under their standard residential line, and the heavier 5.5-inch oval kits that were popular for retrofit jobs in older masonry flues. The compatibility gotcha with Gelco is the connector style. Their early 2000s kits used a snap-lock band that doesn’t always mate cleanly with universal aftermarket sections sold today. If your liner has a printed Gelco label still attached inside the firebox or on the top plate, that tells us the series. If not, we measure the inner diameter and check the seam pattern before ordering or pulling anything off the truck.
OEM Gelco replacement parts are getting harder to source, and for good reason. The company’s residential liner line has been largely superseded by the DuraFlex and HeatShield systems we install now. In most cases, a quality 316L stainless aftermarket section is honestly the better part than the original Gelco, because the metallurgy has improved since most Stamford chimneys were originally lined. That’s the straight answer. What we won’t do is sell you an OEM label at triple the price when an equivalent or better liner section does the job for less.
Signs Your Gelco Flue Liner Replacement Is Failing
- Flaky rust or pinhole light through the liner walls. Gelco’s older residential liners were made from a lighter-gauge alloy than what’s standard today. After 15 to 20 Connecticut winters of heating and cooling cycles, the metal fatigues and perforates, usually starting near the top plate where rain hits it first.
- Water in the firebox after a storm. A failed Gelco liner often lets rain run straight down the inside of the flue. If you’re emptying a quarter inch of water out of the firebox after every nor’easter, the liner has almost certainly separated at a seam or rusted through near the crown.
- Smoke smell indoors when the fireplace isn’t even lit. This is backdraft. A failing liner disrupts the draw your chimney needs. On gusty days in Stamford, the pressure differential pushes exhaust back through gaps in the liner and into the house.
- Visible sagging or a section that has pulled loose from the top plate. When the upper connector band fails, the liner can drop a few inches inside the flue. You may see daylight between the liner and the chimney cap, or hear a dull clank when the wind moves it.
- White efflorescence staining on the exterior chimney brick. Moisture escaping through cracks in a compromised liner carries salts through the masonry. That chalky white bloom on your bricks is a telltale that water is moving through the chimney system in ways it shouldn’t.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
In Stamford, a full Gelco flue liner replacement runs $1,400 to $3,200 depending on flue height, whether we’re pulling out the old liner or relining over it, and whether the top plate and cap need replacing at the same time. Shorter, single-story chimneys land at the bottom of that range. A three-story flue with a rotted top plate and a rusted cap assembly lands at the top.
Every quote includes the liner section itself, the connector hardware, the top plate, labor, and a full teardown of the old liner sections. We give you a flat price before the first tool comes off the truck. The number Wendell writes down is the number on the invoice, not a starting point for negotiation. And like every job we do, the replacement is backed by our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If something isn’t right, one call brings Wendell back at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things from ground level. Look for rust flakes in the firebox, check for water pooling after rain, and run a flashlight up the flue from inside the house to see if the liner looks straight or if you can spot gaps at the seams. That kind of inspection is yours to do. Actually pulling a Gelco liner out of a two-story Stamford chimney is a different animal. It means working on a roof pitch with a heavy stainless section, managing connectors that have been heat-cycled for twenty years, and not dropping a section down through the flue onto your fireplace below. Liner sections are unwieldy and sharp. This is a job where a second set of hands on the roof and a rope line from below make the difference between a clean pull and a cracked chimney crown.
If you want an honest read on whether that Gelco liner actually needs replacing or just needs a sweep and a closer look, call (475) 242-5865. Wendell will tell you straight out if it can wait. If it doesn’t need doing, he’ll be the first one to tell you.
FAQs
A Gelco residential liner in a Stamford chimney lasts roughly 12 to 20 years, with the older lighter-gauge kits from the early 2000s usually failing first. Our coastal Connecticut weather accelerates the timeline because salt air, rain, and freeze-thaw cycles all work the metal seams. If your liner is past year 15 and you’re seeing rust, it’s time for a camera look before the next burning season. Call (475) 242-5865 and we’ll get you a straight answer.
Small seam separations near the top plate can sometimes be re-secured, but rusted-through sections of a Gelco liner are not safely repairable. Once the metal has perforated, patching buys you a season at best and leaves a combustion gas pathway that should not be there. We’ll show you the camera footage before recommending anything, and if it can wait, we’ll say so.
Most Gelco flue liner replacements in Stamford are completed in four to six hours, and we stock the common 6-inch and 8-inch stainless sections on the truck. If your chimney needs a custom oval section or a top plate fabricated, we order it and you’re back in business within a week. Call (475) 242-5865 for a time estimate specific to your chimney.
We stock Gelco-compatible 316L stainless liner sections in the sizes that show up in most Stamford homes, along with the connector bands, top plates, and caps needed to finish the job. We’re an independent chimney service, not a Gelco dealer, which means we can tell you honestly when an aftermarket section does the job better than an OEM label. If we need to order a specific piece, we’ll tell you before you commit to anything.
